NZ Transverse Mercator (NZTM)Go Back
What is it? Basically as far as Mapping is concerned, New Zealand is changing shape slightly and Easting Northing Grid references are now very different.
What does this mean for Tumonz 1-4 Clients?
More detail New Zealand Transverse Mercator (NZTM or NZTM2000) will now be replacing NZMG as the new standard coordinate system for general mapping in New Zealand. It was chosen because it is an internationally recognised type of projection that displays a low level of distortion at its east-west extents. This transformation heralds one of the most considerable changes to New Zealand’s authoritative topographical charts since the 1930s. As part of the national change to NZTM, LINZ have released the new Topo50 topographical map series replacing the old NZMS260 series. Scans of the new map series are included with Tumonz 5 as a seamless integrated layer. Under NZTM, map coordinates (Eastings and Northings) are quite different. Emergency services, search and rescue organisations, the defence forces and government agencies such as NZ Police and the Department of Conservation (DOC) are using the new map series and NZTM coordinates. The Topo50 maps also reflect updated information collected from third parties such as the Department of Conservation (DOC) including walking tracks and huts. |
