What is TUMONZ?
TUMONZ is essentially two components:
  • The TUMONZ engine which accesses data sets, renders them on screen and provides a host of important mapping capabilities.
(When you buy Standard TUMONZ or any of the packages with Standard TUMONZ you will be installing and licensing the use of the powerful TUMONZ engine.)
  • A suite of data sets called modules that the TUMONZ engine accesses and then uses to build your map view according to your instructions.
(You will need to choose which data sets you require based on your needs and your budget and you should also consider when you want to update these data sets.)
An overview of the TUMONZ Data Sets

There are 3 general types of data sets making up the modules. These are:

  1. Spatial data (vector) – basically GPS coordinates that create the map ‘on-the-fly’ as you zoom and pan around New Zealand. This is an extremely useful data type as it can be configured in almost anyway. Examples are, the LINZ Topographic data used on the Standard TUMONZ CD, the LINZ Cadastre or Property Module used in the Property Module module, and the NIWA seabed contours used in the Seabed module.
  2. Aerial photos (raster) – these are images that are spatially ‘aligned’ on the surface of New Zealand. They zoom and pan along with the above Spatial data. However, they are fixed in resolution and will become blurry when zoomed in too far. TUMONZ allows you to display vector data on top e.g. Property Module and road names, and also set transparency so that you can see the map beneath. Aerial photos are provided in a series of Aerial Photos modules.
  3. MapBooks – these are books which are linked to relevant locations on the map with an Icon. Selecting the Icon opens the appropriate page in the book. Books contain text and images. There are numerous books; some are free (such as NZ Schools), while others require you to Purchase an Activation Key (e.g. Fishing spots, Restaurants, Camping Guide, Motels, Golf Courses.)
