What are the Seabed Contours?

This module provides the ocean floor depth contours (bathymetry) around all New Zealand from inshore, to in places, several hundred kilometers offshore. There is variation in the seabed contour coverage and resolution. For most of the higher use coast, contours are provided at 10m depth intervals to 100m deep and in parts extending out to 200m deep. Beyond 200m deep, contours are usually at 50m depth intervals and extend in part to 4,500m deep. The seabed contours are an exceptional resource and complete the definition of New Zealand. You can configure line colour and style.

More important information on the Seabed Contours

The seabed contours database is owned and maintained by the New Zealand Crown Research Institute NIWA (National Institute of Water & Atmospheric
Research Ltd). In providing the bathymetry, TUMONZ and NIWA have entered a partnership. The contours are an accumulation of decades of work and have been sourced from digitising hard copy maps as well as recent bathymetric surveys using highly sophisticated sounding technologies. Some of the data is limited in resolution and does have errors (particularly where it has been sourced from older paper maps). Accordingly, as always we are required to advise that it should not be used for navigation. The seabed contours database is evolving and will improve over time as more surveys are undertaken. The seabed contours are similar to the TUMONZ land contours in that they are vector and can be zoomed to any scale. They differ from the Navigational charts which are paper copy or scans of paper copy and accordingly the Navigational charts are at a fixed scale.
