Online Guide – Map Tiles Service Activation

Tumonz 12 now has support for multiple aerial mapping tile servers – these are the aerial photos & road network maps which load as an on-demand layer in some of the map schemes. This short guide explains how these tile layers now work in Tumonz.

Select the **Map Styles** page (1), double-click the Default with Satellite Imagery (2) map style. The Current Map Layers will show the **NZ EPSG3857 Satellite Images** (3) layer, but the aerial photos will only start to load once an Activation Key has been entered for the service (you only need to do this once).

Once you’ve obtained an Activation code (detail below in next section), select the **Settings** page (1) and copy the Activation code into Tumonz settings (Map Browsing – **Map Tiles Services – Service Keys**) (2).

In Tumonz 12 you can switch select the service you want to use (or just stick with the default that loads with the scheme):

All services has a very generous free monthly allowance which would be sufficient for all our users except for rare cases where you regularly browse very large areas at high resolution – for more detail please see Service Usage notes below.

Tumonz now supports multiple integrated Map Tile Services – to enable this feature you need to enter an Activation Key for the service. Follow the instructions below to create your own key(s). Click on any image to enlarge it.

Create a free account for the Map Tiles Service you want to activate in Tumonz (MapTiler or MapBox – see next steps for more detail) and copy the code into Tumonz settings (Map Browsing – Map Tiles Services – Service Keys).

Select a map style with a Map Tiles Service layer e.g. Default with Satellite Imagery – the layer will now load/display as you move around the map.

Creating a free account at **MapTiler** (default service in Tumonz):

Select **Create Free Account** at www.maptiler.com, sign in with Google or your e-mail and verify the address with the link they send, and finally answer the two questions (role = ‘Cartographer’, use for = ‘Utilise static maps API’). Click on **API Keys** and copy the *Default key* – this is the key to enter in Tumonz settings.

Creating a free account at **MapBox**:

Select **Get started for free** at www.mapbox.com, choose Business/Individual and fill in the few other fields, and finally verify your e-mail with the link they sent. Click on **Tokens** and copy the *Default public token* – this is the key to enter in Tumonz settings.

Usage notes

MapTiler allows for 100k free tiles per month, while MapBox allows for 200k free tiles per month. It takes ~2k tiles to cover a very large farm (taking into account all the levels of detail), and since Tumonz caches tiles the free allowance will be sufficient even when for example a new farm was to be added daily.
You can check your account usage if you are interested (select Analytics in Maptiler, or Statistics in MapBox), but even in the rare case that you exceed the allowance it will simply start loading new tiles when the month rolls over. If you do get a lot of commercial value out of the tile layers and use them extensively, consider extending your account allowance with one of their well-priced plans.
